Pamphlet

Here is our pamphlet:

3/11/10

We just got our T-Shirts back from Native Graphix and they look amazing. Our pamphlets are also completed, and so we have begun selling the shirts!!

As far as meeting with HOMEY, that did not turn out so well. Our contact from HOMEY had scheduled a meeting with us for Monday May 10th and forgot about it, so it didn't work out.

3/4/10

We are almost done with our pamphlet--just need to add a few finishing touches. Our T-Shirts come in 6 days. Our T-Shirt project is right on schedule.
Our contact for the potential documentary, William, finally emailed us back. However, he has not confirmed a date to come meet with us.
On Thursday we plan to talk to the Rethinking the Juvenile Justice System group about advertising our T-Shirt design. We also plan to talk about our final presentation and the documentary.

Where We're At

As of right now, our documentary idea is not looking very solid because the main person we planned on interviewing, is not responding to our emails. We are hoping to obtain some footage before the end of the school year.
Because of this, we have shifted our main project. We have already made a T-Shirt design, and ordered 100 T-shirts from Native Graphix, which is partnered with HOMEY. This way, a portion of the money spent on the T-shirts will go towards HOMEY. We will get the shirts on May 10th. We plan to sell all of the T-shirts and hand out a pamphlet with them. We are now working on the pamphlet. We intend for it to provide insight into our dilemma and explain the real causes for our dilemma. We will sell the shirts for $10-12 each. We want to donate the money we make back to HOMEY.
The point of making and selling the shirts is that we will be donating more than $1200 to HOMEY, which is more than we could have originally given, while raising awareness about our dilemma.

Partnership Mission Statements

Josh:

To work hard at providing successful help to this dilemma in the local spectrum and to realize that there is always room for improvement. To build relationships with new people and organizations by being reliable, generous, and understanding, and by putting the needs of others ahead of my own. To branch out by helping a new organization and those less privileged than myself, and by exploring different ways to help. To make my best effort to overcome any obstacles in my way. To set realistic goals for myself and my group. To be an unselfish teammate and always listen to my group’s ideas. To always remind myself that I cannot solve this dilemma, that I am helping it. To do everything I can to make a change or impact on this dilemma in the Bay Area.

Sarah:

I need to tackle “the High Incarceration of Black and Latino Males” with a respectful and responsible mindset. When working with incarcerated males and people in the government/police system, I need to be respectful at all times. I need to be aware of my bias, and need to be as open-minded possible. In addition to respect comes responsibility. I have a responsibility to this dilemma. I will be responsible and complete all of my goals on time and thoroughly. It is important that I help in every aspect that I can. Whether it be academically or emotionally, I will give back to my group and this dilemma, if not more, than it gave me. My love, courage, and aspiration will help me shape my actions toward this dilemma. My mission is to make an impact on this dilemma, and help bring awareness towards high incarceration of black and Latino males.

Sean:

Experience and what a person takes out of each experience in their life is what makes them grow. When dealing with the dilemma of high incarceration rates of Black and Latino males, I will use my past experiences to better prepare myself for future challenges. Knowing that I am still very uneducated in this area I will approach it with an open mind acknowledging that there will always be something more to learn. Willing to take risks when tackling this dilemma will be the main attribute that will lead to a better understanding and movement towards change, whether it is on a large or small scale. Working alongside others who have had more experience in this dilemma will be a valuable resource, which I strive to have aligning goals with.

Carlos:

I will put forth every inch of effort both physically and mentally towards my dilemma in order to have a positive impact in my community. I will build permanent relationships and connections with new people that will last well beyond my work with them. I will understand that there is always room for self-improvement and upon realizing this I will seek to enhance my attributes to become a better philanthropist. When attempting to tackle this dilemma there will be obstacles in my way, but I will do all in my power, for the interest of my dilemma, to overcome these obstacles. Some of these obstacles may be to big for me to over come, and so I will accept defeat with my head held high and continue on my journey. I will be a team player at all times and play both the roles of an active follower and a leader at all times. Most importantly I will stay true to my morals and values at all times.

3/26/10

1. Theory of Change (as of now): To raise awareness and reveal the true causes and contributors to this dilemma through a documentary.

2. As far as the money goes, we plan to use a small portion of it towards the production of our documentary. As of now, our thought about what to do with the rest of the money is to give the money to the organization: H.O.M.E.Y. which directly parallels our dilemma. This organization has a program where they make and sell T-Shirts, so one idea we have is to buy a bunch of T-Shirts and sell them at Lick, or at other schools in San Francisco. The money we make from selling the shirts will go to HOMEY. This way we would not only give money to this organization but we would also be advertising for them.

3. We plan to use almost all of our project time on our documentary. We intend to meet with various people (Michael Harris, William Thomason, Diane Desmond-Psychologist at San Quinten) and film interviews with them to add to our documentary. We also plan to go to H.O.M.E.Y. at some point and get some footage over there. We aim to promote this organization in our film. We also intend to use our time to edit and work on the technical aspect of the film. In the end, we want to give this film to public middle and high schools in the bay area to show to their students. We also hope to give this film to HOMEY so that they can show it there, and at the schools they work with (i.e. Mission High School).
The purpose of this documentary is to inform those who are at risk of becoming part of this dilemma about the racism and corruption of the police system, thus warning them that they have a higher chance of being incarcerated. Hopefully this will help them make better decisions and completely stay away from illegal activities. The purpose is also to make people want to help this dilemma.
